Demetrios Giannaros, professor of economics at the Barney School of Business, has been promoted to deputy speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives. Giannaros, a Democrat who represents Farmington, has been a member of the Connecticut House since 1994.

Speaker of the House James A. Amann, D-Milford, and House Majority Leader Christopher G. Donovan, D-Meriden, made the announcement Monday. "Demetrios, as an economist, will be a tremendous asset, particularly on financial matters," Amann said.

Giannaros said he was honored to be appointed as deputy speaker.

"Speaker Jim Amann and Majority Leader Chris Donovan are bestowing their trust in me and I will do everything possible to fulfill the faith they have put in me," Giannaros said.

"I have worked very closely with both of them on a number of issues and I know that they are doing an excellent job on behalf of the people of Connecticut. I look forward to working with Speaker Amann and to provide my assistance and advice during these challenging economic times."
