Internationally renowned dancer Miguel Campaneria has been appointed the new chair of dance at The Hartt School Community Division.

The Cuban-born Campaneria, who will begin his tenure at the Community Division in August, was selected as the result of an international search process that yielded a highly distinguished pool of candidates. Campaneria has performed with many of the best companies and prima ballerinas in the world. He has danced principal roles in such well-known ballets as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, and Coppelia.

"This appointment marks an important step in the re-emergence of our dance program as a school of the highest rank," said Community Division Director Mark George. "Campaneria has the vision, skills and talent to take our dance program to new heights."

When Campaneria was seven years old, he and his mother tried to escape Cuba in a small boat. They were caught and Campaneria's mother spent the next seven years in prison. A few years later, Campaneria was at a piano lesson when members of the National Ballet of Cuba came to look at his feet and decided he would become a dancer. He was forced to leave his family in order to study.

Campaneria quickly rose to prominence and became the star of the National Ballet of Cuba at the age of 18. But he defected to Canada during a trip to perform in Montreal. He later defected to the United States and has since become a U.S. citizen. Retired from the stage for 10 years, Campaneria most recently taught in Haiti. In 2007, Campaneria was appointed by President Bush to serve on the National Council of the Arts, the advisory board of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Hartt School Community Division offers a comprehensive program that trains dancers from the earliest stages of development through their entry in the post-secondary and professional worlds. Campaneria will hold initial auditions for his advanced and intermediate ballet classes Aug. 28-30 at the new Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center.
