On Wednesday, June 15, the Hartford
Public Schools (HPS) and the University of
Hartford will sign a historic agreement to establish a
unique, system-wide framework for ongoing research, education, and
innovation between the two institutions.
The signing ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at Betances Early Reading Lab School, 42 Charter Oak Ave., Hartford.
This affiliation of an urban, public school system and a university is the first of its kind in Connecticut. To exemplify the type of collaborative initiatives expected to grow out of this affiliation, guests will be able to observe a first grade classroom at the Betances Early Reading Lab School where University of Hartford students are working with children, and they will hear HPS and University faculty describe plans for ongoing research in early literacy.
Among those who will take part in Wednesday's signing ceremony are Hartford Public Schools Superintendent Designate Christina Kishimoto, University of Hartford President Walter Harrison, Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra, and Betances Principal Immacula Didier. Witnesses to the signing will be University Provost Sharon L. Vasquez, College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions Dean Ralph Mueller, Hartford Public Schools Director of Strategic Partnerships Kelvin Roldan, and Principal Didier.
Under the historic agreement, Hartford Public School students and faculty may benefit from enrollment in University courses while University education students may be afforded priority placement in Hartford schools.
The Institute for Translational Research, established in 2010 at the University, will bring public school and University faculty together to determine what research is needed and to ensure that research activities are relevant to the Hartford Public Schools. These activities will build on existing partnerships at Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School, Betances Early Reading Lab School, Global Communications Academy, Montessori Magnet School at Annie Fisher, University High School of Science and Engineering, and Weaver High School, among others.
