The 2014 Hartt Music Theory Forum will take place on Monday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Wilde Auditorium.

Ronald Squibbs, associate professor of music at the University of Connecticut, will give a presentation entitled "Near Evenness, Complement Unions, and Analysis Using Large Pitch-Class Sets."

For the past 25 years, the Hartt Music Theory Forum has provided an annual opportunity for distinguished musicians and scholars to come to The Hartt School, to share their music theoretical research with students, faculty, and the general public.

Ronald Squibbs is associate professor of music at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. His scholarly and performance activities center on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. He has presented work on analytical approaches to the music of Xenakis, Yuasa, Tavener, Rudhyar and others at conferences and symposia in North America and in Europe. His articles on the music of Xenakis have appeared in Perspectives of New Music, Contemporary Music Review, in the books of essays Xenakis Matters (edited by Sharon Kanach) and Présences de Iannis Xenakis (edited by Makis Solomos), and in conference proceedings.

Selections from his unpublished research may be found at

Squibbs earned a PhD in music theory from Yale University in 1996 and taught at Georgia State University in Atlanta prior to assuming his current position at the University of Connecticut. He is active as a performer, and has recorded piano music by Yuasa and Rudhyar for Aucourant Records. Selections from his Rudhyar recording are currently being featured in an exhibition entitled Enchanted Modernities: Mysticism, Landscape, and the American West at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University, where he will present a recital of Rudhyar’s music later this year.
