Amy Quigley '93 was the speaker at the 2014 Corine T. Norgaard Women in Leadership Lecture hosted by the Barney School of Business on April 1.
Quigley, a University of Hartford alumna (A&S ‘93), spoke at the third annual Corine T. Norgaard Women in Leadership Lecture, which features women in leadership positions. The event is named in honor and in memory of Corine T. Norgaard, who served as dean of the Barney School of Business from 1996 to 2004.
Quigley’s topic for the lecture was “Brand You: The Power of Connections and Building Your Personal Brand.”
Quigley, Chief Marketing Officer of Myelin Health, shared her 20 years of experiences in branding and marketing with students and faculty. She discussed her nine steps for building your personal brand. These steps include establishing how you want to be remembered, creating a network, and making yourself known online as well as in person.
“Ask yourself what you are passionate about,” Quigley advised her audience. She said that one of the first steps to creating a brand is to assess your assets. By knowing your strengths and weaknesses, you can create a strong brand.
Quigley captivated her audience throughout her lecture. She explained her personal experiences with networking and shared how they have led to many professional opportunities…often ones that were completely unexpected. She encouraged the audience to “pay it forward” in providing networking support for others, though being careful to focus time and energy on givers rather than takers.
She strongly advocated the use of social media for personal branding and professional networking. Quigley highlighted Facebook, Twitter, About Me, and particularly emphasized LinkedIn. She gave specific recommendations on enhancing LinkedIn profiles to maximize their brand-building impact. While investing wisely in social media, Quigley encouraged the audience to make in-person interactions a high priority.
Whatever happens, Quigley explained, the best way to start creating and maintaining a successful network is to establish your presence. “Don’t stay out of sight.”
