Christopher Emdin, professor and author of Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation, will talk about ways to get students more engaged in the sciences using music and pop culture at two Hartford area events on Tuesday, April 22.

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Emdin will talk to students and teachers at Hartford Public High School, and from 5 to 6:30 p.m., he will speak to interested members of the University of Hartford community in Wilde Auditorium. His talk at the University is free and open to the public, but registration is required. (Scroll down for information on how to register.)

In an age where terms like "multiculturalism" and "cultural relevance" are littered across the educational landscape, teachers and administrators still have a challenging time implementing instructional approaches that meet the needs of a diverse student population. Emdin will explore the current educational buzz words, bridge the divides between theory and practice, and provide tangible tools for educators in improving their practice in his presentation, which is titled, “Reality Pedagogy: Teaching and Learning from the Student's Standpoint.”

Christopher Emdin is a social critic, public intellectual, and science advocate whose commentaries on issues of race, culture, inequality, and education have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.

Emdin holds a PhD in Urban Education from City University of New York and is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a Caperton Fellow and Hip-Hop Archive Fellow at the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University.

There are three ways to register for the talk: online at, by email at, or by phone at 860.768.5590.

This event is sponsored by the Center for Learning and Professional Education in the Institute for Translational Research (ITR). Chartered by the University of Hartford in 2010, the ITR serves as a college-wide umbrella for collaborative research activities in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions and its community partners.
