Channel 3 Eyewitness News did a story about the University's decision to arm some of its Public Safety officers in order to enhance the department's ability to respond to situations on campus. That decision was announced on Tuesday, May 6, and the Channel 3 story aired during its 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. broadcasts on that same day. The story included an interview with Director of Public Safety John Schmaltz.

The Channel 3 report erroneously says that all Public Safety officers will be armed, even though the announcement from Vice President for Finance and Administration Arosha Jayawickrema states that "the University has made a decision to have both armed and unarmed officers in the Department of Public Safety."
