Two Barney School of Business students won awards on May 2 at the 2014 Spring Connecticut Business Planning/Modeling Competition.
The Entrepreneurship Foundation hosts the annual competition. A total of 35 students from 11 Connecticut colleges and universities submitted applications. Fifteen finalists were selected, including Barney undergraduate Entrepreneurial Studies major Frank Finelli and MBA student Mohan Kocherla.
– Frank Finelli was awarded a $750 seed money prize and three months of free co-working incubator space at Danbury Hackerspace for his 3D printing business plan, “Smart Switch.” The Connecticut Competition judges stated that Finelli's business plan was well-developed, had a focused target market, and that Finelli has a clear understanding of specific needs of architectural firms. They also complimented him on his “clean and clear presentation.”
– Mohan Kocherla won the inaugural Intrapreneurship Award for his DNA-guided management and prescription drug treatment business plan, “Genomas.” Among the strengths of Kocherla's plan and presentation mentioned by the Connecticut Competition judges were the well-defined distribution channels, market potential with limited competition, and great “future-focused” product. They also commended Kocherla on his excellent networking skills and his very complete and professional presentation.
Associate Professor of Management Irina Naoumova attended the finals in support of Finelli and Kocherla. Both students were also winners in the University of Hartford Business Plan Competition in December 2013. Click here for more information about that competition.
