What does it take to launch a new venture?  In addition to a great idea, entrepreneurs need a successful business plan.  University of Hartford students have once again come through with award-winning plans.

At the University of Hartford's 12th Annual Business Plan Competition award ceremony this month, five business plans were recognized.  The annual competition is organized by Barney School of Business Associate Professor of Management Irina Naoumova, and is part of her undergraduate and MBA entrepreneurship classes. Each plan benefited from additional faculty mentors, and was judged by a panel of industry and faculty experts.  First-place prize winners received $500, and runners-up received $250.

Twenty-eight business plans were submitted by a total of 38 students. Among them, 30 were Barney School of Business students, four were from the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA), and four were from The Hartt School.  A number of plans included team members from different schools and colleges.

The undergraduate student plans and winners were:

– 1st Prize: “MotioGlo” by Innovator Group: Noah Brown, Tanis Correa, Frank Finelli, Nicholas Fucci, Jason Hegenauer, Naaman Jackson, Lawrence Lambert, Nick Mamet, Ben Moliere, Bennett Szames, Safa Zarei

2nd Place: “Bébé au Lait” by Sarah Congden

2nd Place: “collaborate hARTford” by Marjorie Gross

The graduate student plans and winners were:

1st Prize: “X-PRESS Car Care” by Yusif Farhad

2nd Place: “The Microphone” by Nicholas Nett

The awards ceremony featured remarks from Barney School Dean Marty Roth, CETA Dean Lou Manzione, and a keynote speech on “Practical Tips for Future Entrepreneurs” by Jerry Vitkauskas, a University of Hartford regent, retired president of AIG Credit Corporation, and a long-time supporter of career readiness programming at the Barney School and the University.
