Ten Barney School of Business students recently spent the day on Wall Street experiencing the history and current practices of investing. Dean Marty Roth and Economics Professor Owen Svalestad accompanied them on this industry trek to New York City.

The morning was spent at global asset management firm UBS. Hosted by Managing Director and former University of Hartford parent Jeffrey Klotz, students learned about the firm’s various business units, departments, and managerial roles. Barney School alumni Stephen Juter ’93 and Justin LaBier ’99 described their career paths and offered insights on research, portfolio management, and trading positions at UBS.

After lunch and a tour of a trading floor, the students spent the afternoon at the New York Stock Exchange. They met with equity traders who described the evolution of the historic exchange from verbal, relationship centric and paper based processes to information intensive, technology driven systems. They saw first hand how many different skill sets such as research fundamentals, technical analysis, trading, and risk management come together to inform market transactions.

For these aspiring asset managers and investment bankers, the UBS and NYSE visit brought to life the concepts they have been learning and applying back on campus and offered invaluable networking opportunities. The day spent on Wall Street provided each student with new insights for forging their career success.
