The University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business welcomed two new inductees into its Alumni Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Thomas O. Barnes Sr. ’72, chairman of the board of the Barnes Group, Inc. in Bristol, Conn., and Roger R. Klene M’90, retired president and CEO of Mott Corporation in Farmington, Conn., were selected from more than 18,000 Barney alumni. (Read more about the inductees’ careers.)

“Both Tom and Roger exemplify ethical, concerned, and active leadership,” University President Walter Harrison told those who gathered for the induction ceremony in the 1877 Club on campus. “They are also two people who have given back not only to this University but also to the communities in which they live. They are terrific role models for our students and a great source of pride for those of us at the University of Hartford.”

Barnes and Klene both are former members of the University of Hartford's Board of Regents.

Earlier in the day, the two inductees met with Barney School students and shared some advice, which they then passed along while accepting commemorative plaques during the ceremony.

“It is very important for us to give back,” Barnes said of his company’s tradition of philanthropy and service. “I would encourage you, as part of your development, to take on at least one charity, volunteer, or serve on a board. It will broaden your scope of what you’ll be able to offer your employer.”

Klene urged the students to stay open to change, even when it is difficult.

“There comes a time when the pace of change moves faster and your ability to accept change starts to slow down. Sooner or later you’ll find yourself resisting that change. I’m here to say ‘don’t do that.’ Think about the changes going on around you and teach yourself to embrace change. Take the risk. Look at it as an ally. If you do…you will become an opinion leader and you’ll become a thought leader.”

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of Alumni Hall of Fame Scholarships to Margaret Betz ’15 and Robert Meerman M’15, two standout students in the Barney School. Betz is majoring in management and marketing while Meerman is pursuing his master's degree in accounting and taxation.
