James Sellars 1940-2017

On Sunday, February 26, 2017, former faculty member Dr. James Sellars passed away peacefully in his Hartford home. The cause of death was a chronic neurodegenerative disease. Sellars joined The Hartt School faculty in 1978 and retired in 2002. During his time at the University, in addition to his teaching duties, he served as chair of the Composition Department and founded the Hartt Contemporary Players, now called Foot in the Door Ensemble. Sellars leaves a large and diverse body of works that encompass operas, symphonies, chamber music, vocal and solo instrumental music, electronic compositions, and works for media. He will be missed by his many students, colleagues, friends and life partners, Gary Knoble and Robert Black.
