"Mistakes, Mishaps, and Miscues: 1950s jazz and the long-playing record."
This paper is about mistakes. Musical, performative, and technological mistakes. However, it is not the mere existence of these mistakes that animates this presentation. Missed entrances, flubbed notes, or mistaken entrances are part of the musical everyday. Rather, this paper considers how such moments get inscribed onto record and what the production and circulation of those mistakes say about jazz, music making, and record production during the middle of the twentieth century.
