The Backstage Café Jazz Series

The Backstage Café Jazz Series will be holding its seventeenth performance on May 13, 2017 – Spring Jazz. The concert will take place in the Roberts Theater at the Handel Performing Arts Center, and will feature renowned musician from Hartt faculty Nat Reeves, along with the Nat Reeves Songbook Ensemble.
Nat Reeves (bass) has built a successful career touring the world with some of the most important figures in jazz in the last half-century. His work as a prominent educator at The Hartt School, Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz has spanned over 30 years. As a bassist, he is regarded as a precise accompanist, known for his impeccable time, deep tones and great earthy, organic sound. As an educator, Nat mentors some of the future greats of jazz. Today, Nat is committed to Jackie McLean’s legacy at The Hartt School, as well as continuing his career performing. Influenced most by bassists Sam Jones, Paul Chambers and Ron Carter, Nat is a gifted musician, who continues to learn from his colleagues and students.
Kirk Woodard (drums) introduced to percussion instruments at 8 years old through Windsor Public Schools and then on to the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. Currently a junior at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, The Hartt School, studying with Eric McPherson.
Sarah Hanahan (alto sax) has been playing saxophone since she was 8 years old - inspired by her dad who is a drummer. Sarah started taking music very seriously from a young age. Currently a sophomore at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, The Hartt School.
Nathan Serot (trumpet) started playing trumpet at age 11, attended Hamilton Academy of Music in Los Angeles, member of All Southern California Honor Jazz Band and winner of scholarship to attend the International Trumpet Guild Conference in 2014. Currently a sophomore at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, The Hartt School.
Josh Noel (tenor sax) began his musical journey at age 9 continuing through high school as well as studying at the New England Conservatory on weekends. Josh has been enthralled by the importance of sound and tone and has made that a focus in his own playing. Currently a junior at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, The Hartt School.
Mike Carabello (piano) one of the upcoming Hard Bop pianists in the Hartford area. He has performed at the White House for President Obama, The Ninth Note Jazz Club, Black Eyed Sally’s jazz Club, The Side Door Jazz Club and the New Haven Jazz Festival. Currently a senior at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, The Hartt School.
Zayne Couch (guitar) started taking lessons in July of 2007 and studied jazz at Manchester Community College.Currently a sophomore in the Acoustical Engineering and Music program at the University of Hartford and part of the Nat Reeves Songbook Ensemble at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, The Hartt School.
