Through a successful application by Hwayeon Ryu, assistant professor of mathematics, the University’s Department of Mathematics has been selected as a Hub Site to host National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-funded StatPREP workshops in the summers of 2018 and 2019.

Ryu will serve as a Hub Leader to help organize the workshops, which will bring participants from regional colleges and universities to the University campus. The workshops will help the University establish connections that have the potential to result in regional and national collaborations in statistics, while bringing national recognition to the University of Hartford.

The grant will support the widespread use of data-centered methods/software and pedagogies in introductory statistics courses. The workshops will focus on “modern pedagogy and with a direct emphasis on real data wrangling and visualization techniques,” and “contemporary ‘big data’ using modern computational tools.”

StatPREP is a Mathematical Association of America program, and hosting the workshop is in line with University goals to prepare students for a data-driven workplace.
