On April 30 1993, CERN made the decision to publish the technologies making up the World Wide Web free of charge. In the 24 years since that fateful decision, the internet has evolved to become an integral part of our lives. Following this week’s theme of Today's Predictions for Tomorrow's Internet, we are distributing this newsletter about the Internet of Things.

Predictions are that the number of internet-connected devices worldwide will exceed 20 billion in 2020. Each of those devices has its own security considerations. Here are a few ways to secure those devices:

  • Ask yourself if you need every device connected. If you have a smart TV, a smart Bluray player, and an apple TV consider connecting only one to the network.
  • Change the default password on every device when you connect them to your WiFi and use a strong password or passphrase.
  • Check for updates to the firmware on the device and keep all your devices current with the latest updates.

More information and tips can be found in the OUCH newsletter attached to this UNote. Remember, you are free and in fact encouraged to share these materials with others, including your family, friends and neighbors.
