The Backstage Café Jazz Series will be holding its eighteenth performance on December 16, 2017 – Holiday Jazz. The concert will take place in the Roberts Theater at the Handel Performing Arts Center, and will feature renowned vocalist and musicians from Hartt faculty Shawnn Monteiro, Nat Reeves, and Steve Davis, Rick Germanson and Josh Bruneau; also including Hartt School students.

Shawnn Monteiro has delighted audiences from USA to Europe with her highly popular jazz repertoire laced with blues-oriented improvisations and the American Songbook.  Shawnn's father was the late renowned bassist Jimmy Woode, veteran of the Duke Ellington band.  

Nat Reeves (bass)has built a successful career touring the world with some of the most important figures in jazz in the last half-century.  His work as a prominent educator at The Hartt School, Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz has spanned over 30 years.  As a bassist, he is regarded as a precise accompanist, known for his impeccable time, deep tones and great earthy, organic sound.  As an educator, Nat mentors some of the future greats of jazz. Today, Nat is committed to Jackie McLean’s legacy at The Hartt School, as well as continuing his career performing.  Influenced most by bassists Sam Jones, Paul Chambers and Ron Carter, Nat is a gifted musician, who continues to learn from his colleagues and students.

Steve Davis (trombone) teaches at The Hartt School, he has recorded many CDs, has worked with many of the jazz icons along with club/concert appearances in New York City and Hartford areas. Steve has recordings as a leader and is currently a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band.  

Rick Germanson (piano) A native of Milwaukee, WI, has been a highly in-demand pianist on the New York City jazz scene for over a decade. He is also an experienced educator, having given clinics and master classes at such institutes as New York University; The Julliard School; New Jersey Performing Arts Center Jazz for Teens Program – to name a few.

Josh Bruneau a graduate of Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, a trumpeter who has already been making a splash in the jazz world, having played with the likes of Eddie Henderson, Jim Hall, Curtis Fuller and Steve Davis. The Josh Bruneau Quintet brings together the best of Hartford with NYC, and the promise of jazz’s next generation alongside established world-class musicians.

Sarah Hanahan (alto saxophone) has been playing saxophone since she was 8 years old - inspired by her dad who is a drummer. Sarah started taking music very seriously from a young age. Currently a junior at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Hartt School of Music.

Enay Tamikoe (drums) has been interested in music since the age of two, using pots and pans out of the kitchen cabinet as his drums. Won best rhythm soloist and two NJ state titles with the Scotch Plains Fanwood Moonglowers. Currently a senior at The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Hartt School of Music.
