Saxophone students from The Hartt School competed in the Connecticut State Music Teachers Association (MTNA) chamber music and solo performance competition on November 4, 2017 hosted at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Capturing top prize in the solo performance category was Joseph David Spence, current MM student and first runner-up Bradley Karas, current DMA student. The chamber music category also featured a full array of Hartt saxophone students, with the Duende Quartet taking first prize, comprising Hartt graduate students Connor Baba, Bradley Karas, Perry Roth and Joseph David Spence. Additionally, first runner-up in the chamber music category was the Ilithios Quartet comprising undergraduate students, Andrew Carey, Sophie Kaye, Abby Pollock and Giovanna Virgil. Each top prize recipient will continue onto the second round of the competition, hosted at West Virginia University in January 2018. All students who competed study saxophone with Professor Carrie Koffman.
