The Barney School of Business recently hosted its 15th annual university wide business plan competition. The award ceremony took place on December 6, 2018, hosted by the University of Hartford Entrepreneurial Center. Barney School Professor Irina Naoumova organized the Business Plan Competition. Entrepreneurs, professors, and business consultants, as well as successful University of Hartford alumni judged both graduate and undergraduate sessions of the competition.

Nineteen business plans were submitted at the competition this year. Students representing the Barney School of Business undergraduate, MBA and MSAT programs, and CETA’s mechanical engineering program presented their plans.

The undergraduate winners, all Barney School students, and their plans were:

  • 1st place ($400) James Coleman, “Car Fridge” space-saving and efficient car cooling system for beverages and perishables.
  • 2nd place, ($200) Alexandra Saharek, “Bead Bar” training program to make custom jewelry.
  • 3rd place ($150), Kyle Wucherpfennig, “Kyle’s To-Go” high quality food restaurant.

This year the judges’ for the graduate business plan competition decided that three plans presented by Barney School students were very close in quality. Each of the following students earned 1st place ($250) awards:

  • Kathleen Brignano, “A Balanced Life” financial services for adult living communities.
  • Justin Grimm, Brews and Wines LLC” social destination.
  • Brittany Tripp, “The Course” mini-golf and recreation complex.

For the first time this year, a group of university alumni selected and provided a financial award to support the plan that is most ready for implementation. Frank Finelli (Barney School), Nicholas Fucci (CETA), and Ken Parker (Barney School) judged the undergraduate competition and selected Lucas Sapin’s business plan Pro Coach and Caddy” the winner of the first Alumni Choice Award ($400). Lucas is a CETA engineering program student, student athlete, also finishing his entrepreneurship degree in the Barney School.
