University of Hartford men’s basketball player John Carroll was named the league’s co-Player of the Week on Monday morning. A redshirt-junior, Carroll averaged a double-double last week to lead the Hawks to a pair of wins against New Hampshire and Binghamton.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, Carroll was one of four Hawks to register double figures in last Wednesday’s 65-56 win against New Hampshire. He totaled 13 points and added nine rebounds to lead Hartford to the regular-season sweep of the Wildcats.
Later in the week, Carroll posted a dominant effort at Binghamton. In addition to netting a game-best 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and a 9-of-11 effort from the line, he compiled his fourth double-double of the season after corralling a career-best 15 rebounds — the most for a Hawk this season — to lead Hartford to the 67-57 victory. The win marked the fourth straight for the Hawks, and it was the team’s sixth straight on the road.
After back-to-back injury-plagued seasons, Carroll has become one of the most consistent players on the Hawks’ roster. Entering the season averaging 6.8 points and 3.9 rebounds on his career, he is posting career-best numbers of 15.2 points and 6.4 rebounds to pace Hartford in both categories. In addition, Carroll has scored in double figures in all but three games this season.
Carroll’s America East honor is the first of his career, while it is the third for a Hawk this season. Junior Travis Weatherington took home the award on Jan. 13, before classmate Jason Dunne received the nod on Feb. 19.
Carroll and the Hawks have one regular-season game remaining, and it is a big one in terms of postseason position. The Hawks are set to host UMBC on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in a battle of the two second-place teams in the America East standings. The winner of Tuesday’s game will lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming America East Playoffs, while the loser will dip to the No. 3 seed.
As either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, Hartford has already locked up a home quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 3. Tipoff from Reich Family Pavilion is set for 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK or by clicking here.
