Many of you will remember that last week, the University shared sad news that our student Theeb Alyami and his friend/cousin, Western New England University (and previous University of Hartford) student Jaser Alrakah, lost their lives in the Chicopee River in Massachusetts. The U.S. Department of State issued a statement related to this event, which read in part, “The young men drowned while courageously attempting to save children in distress. Their heroism represents the very best of the international students who enrich communities across the United States.”

To honor our student Theeb and his cousin Jaser for their bravery and altruism, the University will fly the Saudi Arabian Flag for three days beginning this morning (thanks to Nicole Kurker-Stewart and the International Center). You will see this flag flying from one of the three poles above the Gray Center Amphitheater. When you see this flag, please think about Theeb and Jaser for a moment and hold the memory of their selfless bravery in your heart. We are lucky and proud to have experienced both of them as students at our institution.

Thank you,

Lee Peters
