Music composed by Stephen Michael Gryc, professor emeritus of music composition at the Hartt School, received some international performances during the month of August. On August 22 Professor Gryc’s elegy for solo violin, deep diving loon, was heard in Reykjavik, Iceland as part of the New Music for Strings international music festival. Hartt alumna Gróa Margrét Valdimarsdóttir performed the work at Mengi, Reykjavik’s premiere venue for new music.

On August 15 Gryc’s concerto for clarinet and orchestra, titled A Dance Concerto, was performed in Medellin, Colombia by clarinetist Sebastian Plata and the EAFIT Orchestra. EAFIT is the acronym for Colombia’s most prestigious private university, the Escuela de Administración, Finanzas Y Technologia. The orchestra was under the direction of Cecilia Espinosa Arango who had previously conducted another work by Gryc in Medellin with the Tonos Humanos choir.
