Storm Advisory for Sunday, Jan. 20

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Hartford County until 7 p.m. today. Residential students are asked to postpone their return to campus to Monday afternoon or, for those whose class schedules allow, Tuesday. Students, please do not travel to and arrive on campus today.

Hartt Community Division activities today and this evening are canceled.

Final Holiday Jazz

The Backstage Café Jazz Series will be holding its twentieth and final performance on December 15, 2018 – Holiday Jazz. Please mark your calendars for this special and final concert of the Backstage Café Jazz Series. The concert will take place in the Roberts Theater at the Handel Performing Arts Center, and will feature Shawnn Monteiro, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Rick Germanson, and Josh Bruneau - world renowned musicians and faculty from The Hartt School, Jazz Studies Division founded by Jackie McLean, along with Josh Leslie, a junior at The Hartt School.

Shawnn Monteiro has delighted audiences from USA to Europe with her highly popular jazz repertoire laced with blues-oriented improvisations and the American Songbook.  Shawnn's father was the late renowned bassist Jimmy Woode, veteran of the Duke Ellington band.  

Nat Reeves (bass) has built a successful career touring the world with some of the most important figures in jazz in the last half-century.  His work as a prominent educator at The Hartt School, Jazz Studies founded by Jackie McLean has spanned over 30 years.  As a bassist, he is regarded as a precise accompanist, known for his impeccable time, deep tones and great earthy, organic sound.  As an educator, Nat mentors some of the future greats of jazz. Today, Nat is committed to Jackie McLean’s legacy at The Hartt School, as well as continuing his career performing. 

Steve Davis (trombone) is well-known as one of the most prominent jazz trombonists in the world today. Steve has several recordings as a band leader as well as a sideman and has worked with many jazz icons. Included with his numerous musical collaborations is his association as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band.  

Rick Germanson (piano) is a native of Milwaukee, WI, and has been a highly in-demand pianist on the New York City jazz scene for over a decade. He is also an experienced educator, having given clinics and master classes at such institutes as New York University; The Julliard School; New Jersey Performing Arts Center Jazz for Teens Program – to name a few.

Josh Bruneau (trumpet & flugelhorn) is a graduate of The Hartt School’s Jazz Studies Division founded by Jackie McLean. Josh is a trumpeter who has already been making a splash in the jazz world, having played with the likes of Eddie Henderson, Jim Hall and Curtis Fuller. The Josh Bruneau Quintet brings together the best of Hartford with NYC, and the promise of jazz’s next generation alongside established world-class musicians.

Josh Leslie (drums) born and raised in Akron, Ohio, Josh developed a love for music and drumming while attending various arts schools in the Northeast Ohio area. He attended Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts and Firestone High School studying under great band directors and jazz lovers Eric Langreder and Tom Weaver. In his senior year, Josh also attended the University of Akron, playing in their big band and studying with the jazz department’s professors Mark Gonder, Jack Schantz, and Rock Wehrmann.
